Water Damage Help

Water damage? Start with the source.

A wet ceiling, a burst pipe, or water spreading across the floor can leave you unsure who to call. The right first step depends on where the water came from, whether it is still coming in, and what it has reached.

Start with what you notice

Does any of this sound familiar?

01

A new stain or damp ceiling

Note when it appeared and whether it changes after rain or use of an upstairs fixture. The visible stain may not show the full affected area.

02

Wet floors or swollen materials

Buckled flooring, swollen baseboards, or damp drywall can help identify where water has traveled. A surface that feels dry may still need evaluation.

03

A musty smell after a leak

Tell us when the leak happened, what was dried or removed, and whether odors or discoloration remain. A mold assessment may be a separate next step.

Make the next conversation useful

Three things to do before planning the work.

1

Describe the source

Is it a plumbing leak, appliance failure, roof leak, backup, or flooding? It is fine to say you do not know.

2

Record the affected areas

From a safe location, photograph visible conditions and note when you first noticed them. Keep any repair or drying records.

3

Separate drying from repairs

Ask what needs to happen before walls, ceilings, or flooring are closed up. Source repair, drying, and rebuilding are different parts of the job.

Different needs. Different expertise.

Who may be the right professional?

Plumber or source-repair professional

For an active pipe, fixture, or appliance connection problem.

Water restoration professional

For evaluating wet materials, water removal, drying, and restoration scope.

Roofing or environmental professional

For roof entry points or mold and moisture concerns that need further evaluation.

Before you reach out

A few common questions.

Who should I call first for a water leak?

The source matters. A plumbing problem may need a plumber, a roof leak may need a roofer, and wet materials may need a restoration professional. Tell us what is ongoing so we can help identify the appropriate starting point.

Is a dry-looking wall ready to repair?

Appearance alone does not establish whether materials are dry or whether the source was corrected. Ask the professional handling the work how the affected area will be evaluated before repairs cover it.

What if the leak happened weeks ago?

Include the date, any drying or repair work, and remaining odors, staining, or changes in materials. The next step may involve evaluating lingering moisture or mold concerns rather than active water removal.

EPA emphasizes correcting water problems and promptly drying water-damaged areas to help prevent mold growth. EPA: mold cleanup and moisture control.

You do not need to diagnose it yourself.

Tell us what happened and where the property is located. Exsell reviews your request to help identify the appropriate service and availability in your area.
